the diamond empowerment fund

Founded in 2007, The Diamond Empowerment Fund™ (D.E.F.) is a non-profit international organization with the mission to raise money to support education initiatives that develop and empower economically disadvantaged people in African nations where diamonds are a natural resource.*

DEF was founded by a businessman after returning from a fact-finding trip to Africa. He found Botswana to represent the model for diamond extraction, processing and production. So what makes Botwsana such a great role-model for the rest of Africa? In addition to the diamond industry, Botswana has public schools, hospitals, orphanages, HIV/AIDS clinics and training centers that were all funded by the diamond endustry. But why stop with the diamond industry? Using Botswana as a model, the businessman proposed ideas to transform all of Africa's natrual resource extraction sites and the communites surrounding them. After returning to the US, it was the businessman created DEF in hopes to help Africa and raise worldwide awareness for the diamond industry in Africa.

So who's this businessman anways? None other than my favorite: Russell Simmons. fabulous.
